Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

New legislation now requires for all landlords to install at least one smoke alarm on  each storey of a rental property that is used as living accommodation. This must be  carried out by 1st October 2015.

In addition landlords must install a carbon monoxide detector in any room that contains a solid fuel  appliance which includes coal or wood burning fires and wood burning stoves. It is recommend that a  carbon monoxide detector is also fitted in properties with a gas or oil fired appliance.

The smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors must be checked and working on the start of any  tenancy commencing from 1st October 2015. Existing tenancies must also be fitted with the alarms and  detectors by this date.
